島根県、群馬県、大阪府。サントウも含む分布。ヤマトウは稀少。京都府南部（旧：山城国）発祥。国名としては飛鳥時代に「山背」の表記で記録のある地名。地名は飛鳥時代より前に「山代」と表記していたと伝える。「山城の藤原氏」の意。栃木県足利市小俣町で伝承あり。島根県江津市二宮町神主では安土桃山時代に称していたと伝える。伝承での発音はサントウ。大阪府高槻市城内町が藩庁の高槻藩士、奈良県葛城市新庄が藩庁の大和新庄藩士、栃木県足利市雪輪町が藩庁の足利藩士に江戸時代にあった。足利藩士の推定での発音はサントウ・サンドウ。
