千葉県、兵庫県、茨城県。大分県でスイミ、新潟県でミズカイが存在。スイミは稀少。地形。湖の異形。千葉県香取市八筋川、兵庫県南あわじ市八木徳野、茨城県行方市根小屋に分布あり。茨城県古河市水海は戦国時代に記録のある地名。大分県豊後高田市見目では農業、林業に従事していたと伝える。推定では江戸時代。同地ではスイミ。
※百済系。大阪府東部（旧：河内国）で766年（天平神護2年）に水海連の氏姓の記録あり。
※奈良県奈良市雑司町にある華厳宗の東大寺の正倉院で740年（天平12年）に記録あり。
